Searching

Stephen Chinnock

27 August 2020

I’m searching again
for the Phoenix
arising out of a new pile
of the ashes of my life
once known and loved

My heart breaks again
how many blows can it take
I need desperately the wings
of that bird of resurrection
lifting me beyond
into a sky of blue
viewing below the breakers
on the eternal beach

Landing me gently on the sand
of my final years of life
I’ll make an agreement
with Poseidon
you can have my ashes
when it’s all done

I’ll lie on Buckley’s rocks
contemplating forever
your deep domain
never complaining again!
