How well I remember you
so gentle and accepting
of the mistakes made
by boys and girls in their youth

Your garden always a delight
with the mulberry tree
to turn our faces blue
while Grandma plucked
the chicken home grown
sitting on the back step
by the cape gooseberry

I’m now a grandfather too
not biologically but by heart
I have my team of little ones
that stir my heart
and a few more grown up
that seem to need the wisdom of age

Oh Grandfather you taught me
the point of it all
unconditional love
even when they stray
from the path
we wanted them to follow
